Abstract. National and international policy discourses promote Artificial Intelligence (AI) as “ethical, inclusive, and human-centered.” This study examines how primary school teachers’ ethical reflections shape their uses and non-uses of AI. Adopting an exploratory approach, we outline a developing theoretical model to analyze the problematization of AI adoption through the lens of situated ethics (Zacklad et Rouvroy, 2022). Combining the frameworks of problematization (Fabre et Orange, 1997) and sociotechnical analysis (Flichy, 2008), our results show that teachers construct a situated reflective stance. In this perspective, ethics is a core element of professional decision-making. We also stress the heuristic value of non-use. Inviting research to move beyond measuring intention to use and to investigate processes of pedagogical appropriation. Our work calls for a deeper analysis of the processes of pedagogical appropriation and for the strengthening of teacher training by integrating technical, pedagogical, and ethical dimensions tools.
